4. Tag:Flug nach Mandalay – die „Goldene Stadt“
Der Plan
Morgenflug nach Mandalay, die “Goldenen Stadt”, Stadt der letzten burmesischen Könige. Hier dominieren Fahrräder, Fahrradrikschas und Pferdewagen den Verkehr. In dieser Stadt findet man eine herzliche, sehr gemischte Bevölkerung, landschaftliche Schönheit und eine starke buddhistische Kultur.Nach Ankunft besichtigen wir das Shwenandaw Kloster, das berühmt ist für seine exquisiten Holzschnitzereien, die Kuthodaw Pagode, die wegen ihrer Steintafeln mit buddhistischen Schriften als das größte Buch der Welt bekannt ist und die Kusinara Pagode, mit einem kleinen Museum, wo Ihnen die Mönche gern die berühmte Peshawar-Reliquie zeigen.
Am Nachmittag kurze Citytour von Mandalay mit einer Trishaw. Besuchen Sie die ursprünglich im Jahre 1784 von König Bodawpaya erbaute Mahamuni Pagode, mit dem vergoldeten Mahamuni-Buddha, der ältesten buddhistischen Statue Myanmars und Holzschnitzer, Goldblättchen-Hersteller und Marmorarbeiter im Viertel der Handwerker.
Nach dem Abendessen besuchen Sie das Marionettentheater von Daw Ma Ma Naing, wo die international bekannten Puppenspieler Ihnen in einer zweistündigen Spezialvorstellung einen Eindruck von der hohen Kunst des burmesischen Puppenspiels vermitteln.

3. Tag: Streifzüge durch Yangon – Circular Train und Shwedagon
Yangon ist die ehemalige Hauptstadt Myanmars und bietet entsprechend viele Sehenswürdigkeiten. Nach dem Frühstück fahren wir mit dem City Circular Train durch ländliche Gebiete und können an zahlreichen Haltestellen den Zigarettenverkäufern, Betelnussverkäufern, Wahrsagern, und vielen anderen zusehen. Zurück im Stadtzentrum besuchen wir die Sule Pagode, die über 2.000 Jahre alt ist, bummeln durch den Mahabandoola Park mit seinem Unabhängigkeitsdenkmal, spazieren durch die Innenstadt und über den riesigen Bogyoke Market. Weite Straßen, ordentlich angelegte Stadtplanung und vernachlässigte öffentliche Gebäude lassen Visionen der britischen Herrschaft wieder aufleben, während die stark befahrenen Straßen und durch die Blätter der Baumwipfel schillernden Pagoden von der reichen einheimischen Kultur zeugen. Noch ist die Hauptstadt nicht von Wolkenkratzern und leuchtenden Neonreklamen überfüllt.
Am späten Nachmittag schließlich erwartet uns die weltberühmte, 2.580 Jahre alte, goldene Shwedagon-Pagode, die Somerset Maugham wie folgt beschrieb: “Die Shwedagon erhebt sich stattlich, mit ihrem Gold glänzend, wie ein plötzlicher Hoffnungsschimmer in der dunklen Nacht der Seelen, von der die Mystiker schreiben, gleißend im Nebel und Rauch der pulsierenden Stadt.” Dieser massive glockenförmige Stupa erhebt sich 100 m über die umliegenden Berge. Wir wandern durch dieses prächtige Bauwerk und seine Höfe, Stupas, Glocken, Tempel und Buddhafiguren, und sehen religiöse und weltliche Besucher aus aller Herren Länder. Shwedagon ist das Wahrzeichen von Myanmar und das buddhistische Zentrum des Landes mit über 100 Bauwerken rund um einen mit Goldplatten belegten Stupa. Genießen Sie den Sonnenuntergang über der Pagode!

Today, I went to the British Museum, but first we went to the national portrait gallery for the annual BP show. We both voted for this one as our favourite.
Gerhild went to lunch with her pal and I started with a nice oak clock by Charles Rennie Macintosh.
It was very hot in the museum, so I felt that Satan dragging condemned souls into the jaws of hell was spot on here.
Then I moved on to some Mexican portraits, although I’m not sure that they meet BP’s entrance requirements for the competition.
